Title: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: Talvin on April 16, 2008, 06:33:50 PM Hi folks!
I have finally finished a first, early demo of my new song. It's only a rough mix and I can't change much at the moment. Kasimiruslav played the (real) guitars and the bass on this one. He also did the drum recording and made a rough mix. After that I added the vocals and all the other instruments such as e-piano, fake guitars and strings. I have to send him my recordings for a future version. I posted this at an early stage because I'm curious about what you think. :) Cheers, Tal Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Talvin on April 17, 2008, 03:47:44 PM Nobody? :(
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: elwoodblues1969 on April 17, 2008, 05:12:09 PM Talvin,
Sweet harmonies & a lush bass line...reminds me of The Smiths back in the 80's. Very decent for a rough draft...look foward to the final cut. O0 Thom Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: kara on April 17, 2008, 05:46:03 PM Good song as we are used to from you.
Like Elwood said, i hear the good bass line 8) But I have to listen very hard, it will need some work (compression, EQ,...) at the moment the only thing it does is blur the mix ;D Looking forward to this k Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: folderol on April 17, 2008, 06:23:57 PM Very nice work. Good song.
I agree the bass needs sorting out, and also think the vocal needs to come forward some. Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Talvin on April 17, 2008, 06:38:51 PM OK. I reworked the vocals. The rest is up to Kasimiruslav. :-)
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: MAD on April 18, 2008, 02:53:50 AM Hi Talvin,
this song has great potential. You have a strong arrangement, and really interesting vocals and backing parts (nice bass too). I would agree with Kara, that the instruments need some massaging (EQ etc..) to get them to fit perfectly into place. If this is only a rough cut I can't wait to hear the final one ;D Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Talvin on April 18, 2008, 05:20:33 AM Thanks Mad. :)
The "problem" is I only have an mp3 of the bass, drum and real guitar part so I can't work on it. The virtual instruments I used usually don't need much EQqing. Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Talvin on April 18, 2008, 12:00:00 PM Did anyone listen to the new version (reworked vocals)? The rest will follow...
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: folderol on April 18, 2008, 06:49:18 PM Just had time to listen to it. A definite improvement. Nice and clear now with more presence.
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Martin E on April 18, 2008, 08:56:55 PM Great song, Talvin. Top quality.
The sound quality of the track isn't that great at the moment ( even sounds a bit distorted at times) But I take it that will be fixed in the definite version. I would probably give the chorus a bit more body. But that's a remark I've made once before so never mind me. Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Talvin on April 18, 2008, 09:02:07 PM Thanks. :)I can't mix the song as I don't have all the audio files I'd need. I sent Kasimiruslav my vocal takes and all the virtual stuff. I am sure he will work on the sound. There was some clipping in the wav file he sent me.

Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Laguna Rising on April 18, 2008, 10:14:01 PM Interesting composition Talvin !
An impressive song with many nice melodies and solid construction, I like your vocal touch on it. Well done Cheers Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: MarioD on April 20, 2008, 12:55:23 AM Talvin, this is a very good song.
Clean it up a tad, it’s been said previously so I will not reiterate, and it will sound great. But this is a super start! Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: Talvin on April 21, 2008, 07:57:00 AM Thanks.
I'll probably get his 3 tracks this week so I can mix it properly. Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning Post by: folderol on April 21, 2008, 07:34:53 PM :;

Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Talvin on April 26, 2008, 12:23:55 PM The last mix was overcompressed. I fixed that now although some of you might think it's still too much.
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Laguna Rising on April 26, 2008, 04:19:03 PM Hi Talvin
No, I'm getting used to nowdays' standars of compression and it doesn't seems to much to me. you can ear it just a tiny bit 'squashed' when the overall sound pressure rises. For example the chorus : 1.03 - 1.30 great mix btw 8) Cheers Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: folderol on April 26, 2008, 04:24:13 PM The last mix was overcompressed. I fixed that now although some of you might think it's still too much. I had a quick listen and my first though was that it sounded 'clearer' but I couldn't think why... that explains it!Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Martin E on April 26, 2008, 07:50:35 PM Had some time to listen now, Talvin.
I'm not really bothered by the compression in this mix. What I don't particular like about it is the sound of the high-hat, ride and cymbals which I think are way too present. If you would tame that area of the drummix the whole mix would benefit I think. These three parts also seem to be competing in the same frequency area as the guitars and some of the vocals. I think there's some room for improvement there ;) Still a very good song. 8) Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Talvin on April 26, 2008, 10:59:29 PM I only have an audio drum file. Do you think you can tame the hihats by applying some eq?
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Martin E on April 26, 2008, 11:23:34 PM Yes that's possible. But it will affect the sound of the snare as well. A matter of compromise then.
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Talvin on April 28, 2008, 07:35:13 AM Any one else had a listen to the new mix?
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: kara on April 29, 2008, 08:32:12 AM I like it !
I do agree with Martin, but only because he mentionned it, without him I would never have noticed :-\ k Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *new version* Post by: Talvin on May 01, 2008, 01:57:31 PM Thanks Kara. I still think the last mix was crap so I had another go at it. This one is definitely better I think. I'd be happy if some of you could have another listen.
Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: folderol on May 01, 2008, 06:27:04 PM Yes I think this is a better compromise.

Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: Talvin on May 02, 2008, 02:44:58 PM Thanks. :-)
The only think I can improve is probably the vocals now... Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: MarioD on May 02, 2008, 08:03:04 PM Thanks. :-) The only think I can improve is probably the vocals now... Personally I wouldn’t change a thing, Just MHO Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: Talvin on May 02, 2008, 08:17:10 PM Someone said they're sometimes out of tune and they could be a bit more emotional...As it was the second vocal take, he might be right...

Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: Talvin on May 04, 2008, 08:48:01 PM Thanks. :D
Today I rerecorded the vocals as someone wanted me to sing with more feeling. As I know the song a little better now I think I definitely could perform it better. There should be no more out-of-tune parts either. Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: MarioD on May 04, 2008, 10:58:52 PM It must have been hard to improve on the original but you did it.
Perfect! Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: Talvin on May 05, 2008, 03:58:42 PM Thanks Mario. :)
It is probably a matter of taste now which vocal version you prefer... Title: Re: Every day's a new beginning *1st May version* Post by: Laguna Rising on May 05, 2008, 07:02:13 PM I wasn't expecting another version of this song, but I'm glad you did it since I agree with Mario this even better than the former one.
Quote It is probably a matter of taste now which vocal version you prefer... :-\ that's true, and this last version is the chosen oneThis vocal-style is closer to what I expect (and I appreciate) from you Cheers |
