Title: Prog-Rock month ....another one....
Post by: Laguna Rising on March 25, 2007, 05:41:51 PM
I heard so many good tracks here, composed for the Kvr contest. As you probably know, this month's theme was : Flashback - 70's prog-rock.
I tried to do something in that fashion, too

here it is : Pale dragon returns (http://www.laguna-rising.com/Music/0703_LagunaRising_Pale_dragon_returns.mp3)

..hope you like it !

Cheers

Laguna, I'm diggin that grainy organ, its perfect
bit of Gentle Giant coming through
nice moogish lead there, very inventive wheel work to man
such a true arrangement of the day, coolness

enjoyed to the fullest extent of the law

Hi Laguna,

a lot of great stuff in this track. There is this Camel and Caravan feeling. Today i was up in the mountains. I always get this 70's softprogmood, when i'm there, watching meadows, clouds and sheep. Your song reminds me of that. :)

Thanks a lot for the nice words, guys  ;D
To enter the contest I needed to put into the track every 'cliche' of this kind of music
I was afraid it could be to cheesy... ::)
I'm glad you enjoyed it

Not cheesy for me...I enjoyed every bit of it. The arrangement is excellent/authentic. You "got it" pretty well!

Thanks Fred !
I'm glad you like it, I tried to make it sound more 'analog' than I usually do. Probably the drums volume is a bit too high for the 70's standard (I mean... too loud). They use to let prevail vocals or guitars and keybds in the mix.
Anyway I'm rather happy with it. Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Cheers

I think you've copied that seventies sound very well. The first part reminds me of some early Traffic songs which is one of my favourite sixties bands.  Nice work.

I'm a big fan of early 70's prog and this definitely has that vibe. I heard elements of "Yes", "ELP" and early "Genesis". The synth solo's were very reminisent of rick wakeman and the hammond brought to mind Keith Emerson.  The melotron sound in the early part was very Genesis.  Great playing and arranging skills demonstrated here. Enjoyed this a lot. Excellent.  ;D

Thanks a lot for your kind words Blipp. I'm glad you liked this track, and although it did only #13 as contest result I'm happy with it, and I had fun making it.  ;)

I liked this a lot ;)

Very beautiful Synth solo and alternation of melodies..
I also loved the Drums... Are they real, or VST?

Thanks NeoN ! I'm glad you like it. No, the only real instruments are guitar and bass guitar.
For drums I use Vst and samples mixed together, and sometimes compressed together. I like a lot The D four which is a VST with the same sounds as in the Alesis D4 drum module. (I still own a hardware one).
I use a lot of different drum samples for the snare.

Cheers
