Title: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 14, 2010, 09:57:41 PM Last month Folderol posted this 'Wandering' and insinuated that a bit of collab would be welcome. ::)
I eventually got round to having a listen to this. Here I kick off with just a single finger-pick guitar line to try and establish the 6/8 timing which is there in the original composition. The way that this piece has been built up, initially, tends to disguise the rhythm so I played this part in an attempt to regain some 'fluidity'. :-X To follow on I intend (at the moment :-\ ) to add a melody on the whistle and, possibly, augment this with some bouzouki ..... can you tell I've been away from the folky stuff for too long. ::) ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: elwoodblues1969 on February 15, 2010, 12:49:07 AM Nice little brew your cooking up here...looking forward to hearing the rest of the ingredients. 8)
A lovely job you've done here James! :D -Thom Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: Oren on February 15, 2010, 01:16:02 AM Quote A lovely job you've done here James! :D A perfect accompaniment to the existing music - I am blown away by your acoustic instrument production skills, Mr. Fraser! Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 15, 2010, 06:46:25 PM Mmmm.
I very much like what you have done with this so far :- Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 15, 2010, 10:35:57 PM 8)
Thanks for the kind comments. For the next instalment I have added a whistle melody line. I have also doubled up and panned the original synth part, with the guitar and whistle going midway between them. I have a strong feel towards developing this a bit further. 8) My instinct is to leave this instrumentation as it is, then add a bridge section with a minimal selection of the chord structure but with a different instrument choice, then return to the original theme to finish. :-X We shall see what develops over the next few days ....... I got to say that I am truly enjoying getting back in to something. Thanks, Will. :-* ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: kara on February 16, 2010, 07:42:36 AM The guitar part adds a solid foundation to a song that was wandering a bit, very good idea.
The melody adds a story to the song.... I do think that the melody comes in to fast, give the song a bit time to build up ;) k Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 16, 2010, 08:33:49 AM Quote from: kara I do think that the melody comes in to fast, give the song a bit time to build up I think you are probably right, although I did feel that the chord structure does not allow the melody to have a 'late start' (IMO). The next step may be that I will stick an introduction on to compensate. :-\ ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 16, 2010, 06:59:20 PM I quite agree with this idea. I would think a guitar intro would be best. That way the synth remains in a supporting role which I think it fits well.
Would it help if I sent you a 'throw-away' copy with a leading click track of a few bars built in so you can synchronse more easily? Like the whistle :) Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 16, 2010, 10:19:30 PM :o
This darn tune has been haunting me all night and day :-X :P This latest incarnation has an intro, followed by the main set of themes running into a guitar/bouzouki bridge, then back to the initial theme to finish. I'm quite happy with the development of this ..... ::) but .... ::) I feel that I would like to make it into a 'song' now. :'( Trouble is I don't think I can sing it 8) Time will tell :-\ Thanks Will .... you are making my life a misery, mate ::) 8) ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: kara on February 17, 2010, 08:00:21 AM This is realy comming together 8)
I like it a lot as it is at the moment. Not sure if it needs singing.... k Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 17, 2010, 06:43:36 PM Thanks Will .... you are making my life a misery, mate ::) 8) ;) James I really like what you're doing with this :- Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: Oren on February 19, 2010, 09:35:13 AM I really like what you're doing with this :- Witnessing this metamorphosis has become like a musician's spectator sport - thrills, spills, and no clue as to where it's going next. Go Will! 8) :D Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 19, 2010, 07:58:55 PM It's James that is doing all the hard work.
I gave him a bit of coarse hemp string and he's weaving silk strands into it. Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 19, 2010, 09:50:55 PM 8)
OK .... I've given up on the 'song' idea. I am just about to do some audio cleaning and a bit of mastering to wrap this project up, from my end. Will .... shall I send you my files for you to compile as YOU would like it? ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 20, 2010, 04:49:34 PM Sounds a good plan to me - It's about time I put a bit more into this :)
Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 20, 2010, 10:59:16 PM 8)
Will.... files sent ... check your emails. This is MY final mix ::) All I have done is, as I suggested, some audio cleaning and a bit of mastering. Now let us see what Will comes up with >:D ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 20, 2010, 11:01:48 PM 8)
And in MP3 format. ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 21, 2010, 11:18:28 PM Well I've spent most of the day on this, but being as delicate as I can. James you've really done me proud and turned a scruffy cygnet into a swan.
So here is the mix I've come up with. Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 21, 2010, 11:21:07 PM ... and for the ogg-icaly challenged :)
Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: kara on February 22, 2010, 09:52:43 AM Great song guys, a very good collaboration :-
Alltough different, I like both mixes, can't decide which one I like the best ::) My personnal mix style would be closer to the mix of Will, I think k Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: Oren on February 22, 2010, 05:04:18 PM Great song guys, a very good collaboration :- This piece is very much a folk song, particularly in light of the idea that if the "folk" had a synthesizer, they would probably deploy it exactly as Will has. Or could we just categorize James and Will as "folks"...?... :D James' mix took the song to it's ideal conclusion, and Will refined it further - what a team! :; Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 23, 2010, 03:48:47 PM :D
Thanks for listening, and for the kind comments, guys. I got to say a big thank you to Will for letting me loose with this one. I have had a lot of personal 'ups and downs' over the past few months and it has really helped me to have gotten involved with this tune. Great therapy. 8) ;) James Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: folderol on February 23, 2010, 07:37:53 PM This has been a great collab for me too. I hoped James would pick up on it, and he sure did O0
Title: Re: Will's Wandering Post by: offthewall on February 23, 2010, 09:15:42 PM ::)
In future .... don't hope ..... just ask ::) :-* ;) James |
