Title: September KVR
Post by: offthewall on September 14, 2011, 12:33:25 PM
I don't know where the time goes, mateys.  :-\  I just seem to bo so busy all the time  :-X

Anyway, here goes for another month.  Theme is Blues.

I had a bit of a problem with this theme because of doing so many blues songs recently. There are just so many sub-divisions of the genre that I wasn’t sure which way to go.
So … I thought I would go for something different.
This is a cover .. but not a copy !  It’s my own version of a song recorded by the Memphis Jug Band on Nov 26, 1930.  I was inspired to make this style of blues by two of my (very) old friends,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAQU3JZUKCk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAQU3JZUKCk)
who include this song in their act.  They’ve recently had their 40th anniversary of playing in this style that they call ‘Hokum Music’ which they describe as ‘Blues with a smile on it’s face’.

Here we have
You may leave but this'll bring you back.

Acoustic archtop guitar
Johnson ‘dobro’ resonator
Vintage mandolin
Acoustic fretless bass guitar
Marine band harmonica
Cider jug

I tried to capture the sound and spirit of the style by recording all instruments as live ‘single takes’ into a mono microphone with the minimal processing of noise reduction, EQ and room reverbs.

If any of you click that link, to my old pals, the Hokum Hotshots ... I would seriously recommend that you have a look through this whole concert footage from earlier this year.  I just found this stuff myself ... and it really shows just how darn versatile the guys are.  They had their 40th anniversary, last year, of working this act.  :o

Thanks for your comments, Azell  :-*

James,

An impeccably authentic take on a classic. 8) I like the upbeat tone of it.The movie "The Blues Brothers" is what ignited my interest in blues...although I don't follow it closely and I only like this genre in moderation.
