Title: Nuevo jazz project - I need your help guys
Post by: kara on July 23, 2007, 07:55:08 PM
What is this all about ?
Actually it is a dream i had a couple of years agoo...

In jazz there has been over the past years a couple of new age movements which gives birth to genres like free-jazz, nujazz,... but, true it was inovating from a musical point of view, but NOT from a sound point of view.

So I would like to start a new project, which uses (yes) the jazz theory but (no) not the classical jazz instruments.

There is a whole new universe to discover here. Imaging a bass line played on a tb-303, just as easy example.

What do you think of the idea ?

I think everybody who is able to think a bit 'out of the box' could participate on this project. And this project will be unique to kara-moon.
- Ever tought of sending that penny-wistle trough free-amp to get a completly new sound ?
- Ever tought of using that axe in a way nobody ever did before ?
- Ever tought of ........ let me know ! be creative !

This could be something realy unique

Interested ? Let me know
And no, 'jazz is difficult' is not an excuse, because it's wrong  ;D

I'm up for anything, Kara.
When I was learning the penny-whistle my teacher, who is by trade a jazz saxophonist, used to say that the only limit to any instrument is the imagination.  We started the course with the aim of playing traditional Irish music but ended up playing rock, blues and jazz.
Lead me to it, man!

Yes it should be interesting as a project.

And it can go anywhere. Just as an example, and not to push it in that direction, my track 'Mr. president' was a small attempt in that direction.
Since it was just a first attempt, i failed in a couple domains but allso was succesfull in others.

The bass played, is a typical jazz bass line, only aspect that was changed, was the processing of the sound. It is played by 2 freealfa  synths and processed with a heavy chorus.
The most interesting experiment was the drum track, it is actually a very typical jazz pattern that is played. The difference is that it is not played trough a standard drumkit, but trough a sampler with only one sample that is detuned depending on the note it receives. To make it more intersting as a rythmic pattern I added a syncronised ping-pong delay. And to get the typical electronic rythme, I added the synth kick to it.
Another example is the synth in the right channel, which is atually based on 2 typical rithmic guitar patterns. They again are played by 2 freealpha synths which are slightly delayed.

Where I failed (for the moment) is in the chord progression, it seems quit hard to make complicated chordprogressions in electronic music. It just didn't sound right, so I had to simplify. This seems quit common in electronic music.... if I look at Jean Michel Jarre tracks, I see that they are all very simple from a point of view of chord progressions, sometimes he uses interesting keys but he allways keeps it simple. Klaus Shultze (see www.klaus-schulze.com for those that don't know him) pushed this concept further and makes use of more complicated harmonies, especialy in his later albums.

This is just an idea where this could go, unlimited possibilities
A real challenge !

Yeah I agree on everything you wrote here. I mean... it IS interesting, it's a challenge, and I love the experimental thing. Many times I prefer to listen to a failed experiment than the usual-crap working good (but boring). I was excited by the Alchemaic digitalis section at the 'old' auditorium for its experimental nature.
Jazz music as I know it, has a strong tendency to push it to the limit, try different solutions, have no defined boundaries, and the master of this music are well-known innovators

So good luck for your new project  8)
 ;)

ok, an update
The goal of the project is to experiment with a couple of music aspects and push it in other directions.
Some examples
- What happens of live musicians have to play together with rhythms they are not used to ?
- What happens if real live instruments play together with highly synthesized tones ?
- What if a song doesn't follows all established patterns.

Highly interesting question, who can lead to interesting music.

I'm looking for a short of project team here, who is willing to work with me on such music....

To give you an idea, here is a little preview on what I'm working on :
http://www.kara-moon.com/rony/tmp/DIDversion1.mp3

The goal of this song is to see how live musicians can improvise on such a song and still keeping it coherent

What do you think?

:-\ mmmhh... very odd rhythm. There's plenty of room for improvisations.
a well defined atmosphere though. I'd like to try to use it for some jamming but very busy atm  :(
Let's see how it goes

Cheers

Yeah LR you could be right, perhaps i overdid it a bit on the rhythm section.
I'm gonna try to change the rhythm track with a bit more recognizable pattern perhaps.

Anyone else interested ?

This sounds great Wyat, and exactly in the spirit I had in mind.
Very special sound.
How did you do that ?

I started by listening to your track,  plucking around with a melodic line that went along with your track..

Next, I reversed your track and listened to it backwards..

Then I recorded a Stratocaster track with your *backwards* track..

After the guitar track was recorded, I reversed *it*, so it would now go along with your original forward track..voila..not bad..sounds different with the attack/release reversed.

Last, I did a bit of sound shaping to the guitar track to get a nice tone, and tweaked the amplitude just a little so it fit with your song.

This  is a super-way-better Conga track to me..

..I think it adds something very cool..

..not sure if the last one really does..

..since there are many bell-like tones in there already.

Besides..I just like da Congas ;D

What do you think??

Interesting project, Rony. I listened to your original track, but guess what, Wyatt's tracks won't download for me (whoda thunk it ;)). Oh well, we'll probably get a collabed version from you when it's down? I look forward to hearing it!

Yep Wyat and me are working on some tracks
And then I'll post here a first mixdown to see where it can go with other contributions.

At the moment I'm in Schotland for some professional activities, but I'm back next week  8)
Keep in touch  ;D
