Title: Blog : The creation of a pop song
Post by: kara on April 15, 2007, 02:10:15 PM
This is a music forum isn't it ?
So why don't we make some music... together I mean.

Let's give this a try, ok ?

So, what do I need....
1. A drum player (or a good programmer), I'm zero at drums
2. I'll do the bass track
3. Keys
4. A guitar player
5. A singer, I can't sing. I have a good singer here, but she only sings french... perhaps english would be better

Who's in for this ?

Once we have our first virtual band, I'll lay down a chord progression for the song which we can discuss

Kara

Sounds cool, I'd like to do the keys part. I may also do some drum programming but a real drummer would probably sound better. I'm also interested in writing the lyrics.

Great Marc !

In the meantime (time that others join us), lets discuss a bit about the song we want to make.
A pop song, so let's keep it simple :)
I propose we start in C, we can still transpose it in function of the person that wants to sing it  :D

For the verse, we could take the typical 2 x 8 bar structure, this makes it relatively easy to write the lyrics for it
Now if we take a bit of freedom on a typical V-I-II progression, we could make this :

G | C | C   | G |
G | D | D7 | G |

2x
One chord per bar

Just an idea, all of this is open for discussion and can be changed.

To give you an idea, see attachment

PS : o forgot, tempo is standard 120

It depends when!.....
but, probably I can add some (simple) guitar, or chime in at the end with some whistle or mandolin, as a fill-in.

Is something like this acceptable?

Maybe it'd be cool to have some minor chords in there? For example, the chorus in major and the verses in minor or vice versa? Just think it'd give some nice contrast dramatically.

This makes me feel like something country, so here's my (very quick) take on it.

Some good ideas allready
Since Marc is going to write the lyrics, it actually up to him what style of song he wants

Don't take me seriously!!  My contribution is only a 'stream of consciousness' and, in being such, is only a germ of an idea to be taken up or spit out as the collective see fit.
I'm just happy to be here!!

Whoa, I don't want to limit the options here! ;D As long as I have a good subject I should be able to fit it into any style - it's just that I like minor chords. Kara, since you suggested the idea I propose that you decide about the style and the chords! :) We still need a singer though, and this may be a big influence on what melodies we end up doing.

I'm a big fan of minors, too. They do give a sense of feeling to a tune, so keep the composition rolling.
I'll just fit in to whatever theme evolves.

Suggestion for a following part to the verse already submitted:

    Bm | Am | C   | D |
    Bm | G   | Am | D |

Just a thought.

ok guys, after been away for a job (yep i need money too  :D ) i've toyed a bit with the different ideas

Here is the result, again just an idea, everything can change,

Intro :
A | E | A | E7 |

Verse :
|A | A/G# | F#m | A/E  |
|A | E    | E7   | A   |
|A | A/G# | F#m  | A/E  |
|A | E    | Bm7  | Amaj7|

Chorus
|D/A   | D    |Bm    |Bm/A  |
|G     | G    | Asus | Asus |
|Bm    | E7   | Bm   | E7   |
| Em   | Asus |Bm    | Bm7  |

End
|Em    | Bm   |

I've made a litle demo, just to give an idea of the style.
It plays intro and then 2 times chorus -verse
and end

Depending on the lyrics we'll determine the structure of the song, but the building blocs, if you agree, are there.
Somewhere we'll need a bridge in there too.

As you can hear in the demo, I've left plenty of space in it so that others can fill  8)

And of course I'm open to all comments, changes,....

Sounds good, I am in. I am best at drums, so I offer live drum part. Kara can you remove drums (maybe also bass part) and post file ? I load it up and record drums in sync with click.

Will be enough to post one stereo file (i mean just drums) or separate files for every part for further mixing ?

And what type drums?

1.pure acoustic
2.RnB
3.hiphop
4.Phat (something like The Prodigy)
5.electro
6.glitch

Yes, great !!
Live drums is what we need  8)
Since it will be a popsong, I think accoustic drums would be best ?
One stereo file will be ok I guess

I've uploaded the piano track mixed with a clicktrack for you

This is sounding cool!
You can count me in. I can guitar along to it, if you don't get a better player offering. Otherwise I should be able to hack some penny-whistle as a fill-in.
Looking forward to this.

Thanks James,

We'll definitively need a rhythmic guitar to fill that space around the keys, well... I hope that Marc leaves some space  :D
Some whistle around future vocals would be a nice idea too

I'll wait and see what comes up, as any contributions from me would be 'window dressing' rather than 'constructive'.

I had some technical problems, but I solved it and I am on the way to work it out.

I'll do whole record in one take, so it will take some time to learn it properly.

I'd love to help out with this, but you know I can't sing.... :P

Unless you want the whole song to slide into the "Dark and Evil" category ::)

Here it is. There are some timing issues, but I believe that with other instruments it will work. Otherwise give me second chance.

@ emtpysound : thanks, good building blocks in there

@ oren : will certainly need some axe in there, but first we have to construct the song, and that depends mostly from the lyrics.
Let's see what comes up

I like the piano track in this collaboration-it has a nice Elton John quality to it. :)
